Weipa
Weipa is a large coastal community of approximately 4,000 people, located on Albatross Bay on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The Weipa region is extremely rich in bauxite, with much of the surrounding land around the township leased to the mining company Rio Tinto. The whole place was tinted red, the tree's on the track in, even the white cockatoo's were tinted red.
To the north of the town is the one lane bridge across the Mission river which takes you out to Mapoon.
The mission at Mapoon was used to send children from around Cape York to be cared for, the mission later closed.
When the mining came the people from Mapoon were relocated to a new Mapoon which was created by the mining company.
